One of the important uses of biodiversity is as medicinal plants. Medicinal plants are plant species that are known or believed by the community to have medicinal properties and have been used as raw materials for traditional medicine. The use of natural ingredients is one of the choices by some communities to maintain their health, and the growing "back to nature" movement has led to an increase in the utilization of natural resources.
Learning media is one of the factors that can contribute to the success of a learning process. Optimal learning must be supported by reinforcement in interactive patterns derived from learning sources or media. These reinforcements can be implemented through scientific observation studies within school environments or the surrounding community. Communities that still maintain traditions in using plant-based traditional medicine are valuable resources that can be explored and used as references for learning media in schools.
This study aims to identify the types of plants used by the people of Rambah Subdistrict as traditional medicine, which will later serve as the foundation for designing learning media in the form of a Pocket Book. This research is qualitative in nature, with the study conducted in Rambah Subdistrict, one of the 16 subdistricts in Rokan Hulu Regency. The government center is located in Pasir Pengaraian Village, which consists of 13 villages and 1 urban area, with a diverse population including Malay, Minang, Javanese, and Batak ethnic groups (Central Statistics Agency of Rokan Hulu Regency, 2019). This research was conducted and compiled from June 2023 to May 2024.
The research sample consists of the people of Rambah Subdistrict, selected using the Snowball Sampling technique. The sample includes key persons such as the Head of the Community Health Center and traditional healers who served as interview sources. Data collection was carried out through interviews with the sources and field observations based on their directions. The research was conducted in stages, with the first stage involving the collection of primary data on the types and uses of plants utilized by the community as traditional medicine, and the second stage involving the design of the Pocket Book based on the findings from the first stage. The Pocket Book design follows the steps of curriculum analysis for the 10th grade on the topic of Biodiversity.
From the interviews and observations conducted, a total of 92 plant species from 54 families of medicinal plants were identified, with the highest number of species found in the Euphorbiaceae and Zingiberaceae families, each containing 5 species. Thirty species were classified as trees. Twenty-two species were used to treat general illnesses. The most commonly used plant part was the leaves (50%), the most common method of preparation was boiling (52%), and the most common method of use was drinking (57%). Of the 92 medicinal plant species identified, 8 were potential species (plant species with medicinal properties that are not yet widely known) used in Rambah Subdistrict. These findings will be used as data for the material description in the Pocket Book design. This design is expected to be used as a learning medium for the Biodiversity topic in high schools, thereby optimizing the learning process and ensuring its effective implementation.
Based on this research, the author suggests that future researchers further develop the Pocket Book on the identification of traditional medicinal plants from the study results, so that the design product can be tested and validated. Additionally, further research should conduct chemical testing on the contents of the plants used as medicinal ingredients and examine their pharmacological effects.
