Etnografi Virtual Pengungkapan Diri Mengenai Self Harm Dan Kesehatan Mental Pada Pengguna Media Sosial Twitter
Virtual communication, which is commonly used, creates a new
phenomenon for its users. Social media users like to share their daily activities on
social media, so personal information is often found on social media, including
the outpouring of self-harm and mental illness experienced by someone. The
culture of sharing activities and moods on social media makes self-harm behavior
more obvious. In this study, the researchers wanted to analyze the virtual reality
that exists on Twitter social media regarding self-harm behavior and disclosure of
mental illness, look at culture and interaction patterns, as well as what symbols
are used by Twitter social media users related to self-harm activities and
disclosure of good mental illness. on the communicator and the communicant.
This study uses a qualitative research method with a virtual ethnographic
approach. Selection of informants using purposive methods and data analysis
Miles and Huberman. Primary data were obtained through interviews with ten
informants who are active users of Twitter social media who often share self-harm
activities or who actively tell about their mental health as survivors of mental
illness, as well as supporting documentation.
The results of this study indicate that in self-disclosure on social media,
users use three types of identities, namely anonymity, real-life identity, and
pseudonymity. Twitter's virtual culture in terms of showing self-harm and
openness about mental illness, namely making posts related to self-harm, posting
injured body parts, telling stories about the development of consultations with
psychiatrists, and posting certain pictures that have certain meanings in the
context of mental health. Most of the informants do self-disclosure to get peace or
as an escape from real life, while some of them want to get attention from others
so they get support or enthusiasm. This relates to the purpose of using Twitter as
a place to open up. Based on the results of the study, the informant said that the
culture of Twitter users is one of them has a high enough concern in responding
to self-harm and mental illness problems so that informants can find the need for
support from others by doing self-disclosure on Twitter.
