An Analysis Of Slang Words On The Song Lyrics In Divide Album By Ed Sheeran

The aim of this study was to find out the types of slang word-formation and the kind of meaning in the slang words found in the song lyrics in Divide Album by Ed Sheeran. This study used a qualitative descriptive design. The researcher used the theory of slang word-formation by Mattiello (2008) to classify the slang word-formation and the theory of seven types of meaning by Leech (1981) to organize the kinds of meaning. There were five types of slang word-formations and two kinds of meaning found in this study. The Slang word formations were conversion, acronym, blending, variation, and clipping, while the kinds of meaning are conceptual meaning and connotative meaning. The most common one for slang word-formation was clipping (42,85%), and the meaning was conceptual meaning (77,92%). Most of the slang words in this study were only simplified or abbreviated to present the original terms which had a similar sense or retained the actual meaning.
