COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE MEANING OF RACISM IN THE FILM HIDDEN FIGURES AND THE FILM JUST MERCY

Racism is a difference in treatment and equality towards certain groups, this phenomenon often occurs, causing various kinds of conflicts among the community. Theodore Melfi, director of Hidden Figures and Destin Daniel Cretton, director of Just Mercy, depicts a visualized portrait of issues of racism in American society with a different year of background through cinematography. The purpose of this study is to find out how the meaning of denotation, the meaning of connotations and myths as well as the similarities and differences of signs of racism are shown in the film Hidden Figures and the film Just Mercy.
This research uses qualitative research methods with semiotic analysis of Roland Barthes. The subjects of this study were the film Hidden Figures and the film Just Mercy. Data are obtained by the method of observation, documentation and literature study. The data analysis unit was selected based on scenes depicting 14 scenes of racism, 7 from 104 scenes of Hidden Figures and 7 from 119 scenes of Just Mercy. The technique of Checking the validity of the data using triangulation.
The results of this study show that (1) the meaning of denotation, which is contained in the film Hidden Figures and the film Just Mercy is an example of the real attitudes, behaviors, words or acts of racism black people get from white people. (2) The meaning of connotation, indicating that it is white people who still look down on black people. (3) The meaning of myth, showing how attitudes, behaviors, words and actions are passed down from generation to generation until that racism still exists. As well as the similarities and differences in the signs of the two films lie in the issues raised. The difference is that Hidden Figures describes discrimination in employment, Just Mercy tells the story of discrimination in the legal justice system in black citizens. Both films show the behavior shown explaining the forms of modern racism created by globalized history and culture.
