CRITICAL DISCOURSE ANALYSIS OF SOCIAL ISSUES IN SQUID GAME DRAMA SERIES

Squid game drama series contains a discourse on the reality of social problems that occur in South Korea. A social problem is basically a condition of life in a society that is undesirable or a condition of life that causes problems. Social problems can occur due to obstacles in meeting needs, due to socio-economic changes and the use of Science and technology. This study aims to dismantle the discourse of social problems with critical discourse analysis methods belonging to Norman Fairclough, focusing on the “irregularities” of the phenomenon of social problems in the drama series Squid game.
This research is a qualitative research with a critical paradigm. The subject of this study is the squid game drama series, with the object of research is pieces of scenes that represent social problems in the squid game drama series which consists of 30 scenes. Data collection techniques used are observation, documentation and literature study. The data analysis technique used is Norman fairclough analysis technique, with validity technique is triangulation of data sources.
The results showed that the pieces of the scene in the drama series squid game contains the discourse of the reality of social problems. The discourse appears and is articulated implicitly through scenes, visuals and dialogues between characters. At the microstructural level the social problems shown are; poverty, social inequality, crime, discrimination, exploitation of immigrants, gender inequality, pandemic, depression and suicide, and LGBT. At the mesostructural level, the emergence of scenes that represent social problems in the squid game drama series is a discourse that the director wants to convey, where in the process of writing the script he wants to create a fictional allegorical story that is full of reality that occurs in real life. Scenes of social problems related to reality in society, making this series well received and crowded public consumption . At the Macrostructural level, the Korean state that adheres to the liberalist market system is of course closely related to capitalism. This causes social problems that occur in society. Free market competition makes the rich richer and the poor poorer. This is seen in the drama series squid game where the lower class people who have to fight to survive.
