ABSTRACT The aims of this study were (1) to identify the potential and challenges faced by agricultural extension workers in improving food security in Indragiri Hilir Regency, Riau Province. (2) Identify the potential and challenges faced by rice farmers in increasing food security in Indragiri Hilir Regency, Riau Province. (3) Analyzing the food security of rice farmers in Indragiri Hilir Regency, Riau Province. The research method is a survey method with a sample of 31 extension workers, while 50 rice farmers. Determination of extension respondents using a census technique and a purposive sample of farmers. Data analysis used descriptive analysis to identify potentials and challenges for agricultural extension workers in improving food security and identifying potentials and challenges for farmers in improving food security, while quantitative analysis was used to analyze the food security level of farmer households. The research results show; 1) There are 11 potentials and 7 challenges seen from the profile of extension workers, 9 potentials and 13 challenges seen based on the competence of extension workers, 2) There are 10 potentials and 2 challenges for rice farmers in increasing food security, and 3) The level of food security of rice farmer households in Indragiri Hilir is classified as high in terms of the aspects of food availability, food access, and quality of food safety.
