ABSTRACT
POTENTIAL DRUG INTERACTIONS IN COVID-19 PATIENTS AT ARIFIN ACHMAD HOSPITAL, RIAU PROVINCE IN 2020
By
Ahmad Al Faruqi
Background : Drug interactions are drug effects that occur as a result of taking drugs together. An increase in the number of drugs administered is directly proportional to the increased opportunities for drug interactions and the risk of side effects experienced by patients. Pharmacological management for COVID-19 patients is the administration of symptomatic and supplemental drugs so that drug administration tends not to be a single drug but more numerous or polypharmacy.
Objective : This study aims to determine the potential for drug interactions in COVID-19 patients at RSUD Arifin Achmad Riau Province in 2020.
Method : The research method is descriptive retrospective using medical records and the Medscape application: Drug Interaction Checker to identify potential drug interactions. The medical records used were COVID-19 inpatients for the period March 1 2020 to December 31 2020 at Arifin Achmad Hospital in Riau Province who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria, obtained 693 populations then used the simple random sampling formula so that the samples examined were 170 record patients medical.
Result : The highest number of drugs administered to COVID-19 patients was ≥10 drugs (60.6%). The most common type of antiviral drug for COVID-19 was oseltamivir (51.8%) then for antibiotics was azithromycin (54.7%). Potential drug interactions were found in 79 patients (46.5%). The most severity of drug interactions was moderate with 98 interactions (46.1%). This research shows that the potential for drug interactions is still found in COVID-19 patients, so clinicians need to take this into consideration in selecting the type of drug as a pharmacological treatment in COVID-19.
