Konsumsi Power Electrolyzer Fm21-Sp Dalam Memproduksi Caustic
ABSTRACT
In the Chemical Plant department, caustic soda are produced by the electrolysis of a saturated solution of sodium chloride/brine (NaCl). The electrolysis process is a prosses by which electric current is passed through a substance to effect a chemical change. The chemical change is one in which the substance loses or gains an electron (oxidation or reduction). Electrical energy (power) is required to operate the electrolyzers. This power comsumption have to be controlled in order to get the optimum value. If the power are not evaluated or monitored, the excessive amount of power is going to result in higher production cost. This analysis was made to calculate the design power consumption and the actual power consumption in producing caustic. The resulting power then will be compared. Based on the results of the analysis, the average value of the power used to produce caustic are 2,3303 mW/ton (design) and 2,4727 mW/ton (actual). If the actual power consumption used in the field is higher from the design power it’s going to result in higher production cost. Electrical energy (power) has a close relationship with electric voltage. Voltage is the most important factors that makes up the power. Higher the voltage, higher can be the power. There are many factors that affect the voltage some of them are the type of membrane, the lifetime of the electrolyzer cell, the electrode coating, and lastly impurities. Therefore, these factors must be maintained.
