Daya Jerap Dan Efektivitas Karbon Aktif Pelepah Kelapa Sawit (Elaeis Guineensis Jacq.) Untuk Mengadsorpsi Logam Ion Cu2+
ABSTRACT
The rapid development of the oil palm plantation industry is currently causing more and more waste to be formed, one of which is palm oil frond waste. Palm fronds have a carbon content of 81.25% which is quite high so that they can be used as activated carbon as an adsorbent which is useful for anticipating or minimizing Cu2+ ion pollution in the environment. This study aims to study the effect of contact time and mass of adsorbent activated carbon of palm fronds on the adsorption of Cu2+ ions on the adsorption capacity of adsorbents of activated carbon of palm fronds and the effectiveness of adsorbents of activated carbon of palm fronds on adsorption of Cu2+ ions. The research phase began with the preparation of palm frond samples with a size of (-80/+100) mesh, then activated with H3PO4 and 3M HCl for 24 hours. The characteristics of the adsorbent from palm fronds with H3PO4 activator were obtained to contain 3% water content, 3.9% ash content, and 757.593 mg/g iodine absorption capacity. As for the characteristics of the adsorbent from palm fronds with HCl activator, it was obtained that it contained 4% water content, 9.7% ash content, and 588.816 mg/g iodine absorption capacity. Based on the results of the best adsorbent characteristics using H3PO4 activator. The adsorption process was carried out at a mass variation of (10, 15, 20) g, contact time of (30, 60, 90, and 120) minutes with a stirring speed of 90 rpm, and a concentration of copper ion adsorbate (Cu2+) of 10 mg/L. The optimal adsorption power obtained from the H3PO4 activator was at a contact time of 90 minutes with a mass of 10 g of adsorbent of 0.965 mg/g. The highest adsorption effectiveness was found in the contact time of 90 minutes with the amount of adsorbent activated carbon of 20 g of palm fronds, namely 99.76%.
