“Titik Optimal Penggunaan Surface Optical Brightening Agent (Oba) Terhadap Nilai Optical Properties Kertas”
ABSTRACT
At this time, the development of the paper industry experienced a rapid increase, so that the paper industry was required to be able to meet the demand for quality paper for the needs of the global market. One way to meet paper quality is to go through several components in a paper machine and add chemicals to become paper that has the required quality. Chemicals added to meet paper quality are optical brightening agents (OBA) which have a function to increase the value of paper's optical properties. The purpose of this observation is to determine the effect of optical brightening agent (OBA) on the optical properties of paper, namely the values of a*, b*, whiteness, fluorescence (UV). To prove the function of OBA on paper, tests can be carried out using optical brightening agent (OBA) doses varying from 0 gr/L to 100 gr/L but using the same doses of CaCl2, starch, and basoplat (Surface Sizing Agent). Based on the experiments that have been carried out, the optimum point was obtained at a dose of 50 gr/L with a*, b*, whiteness, fluorescence (UV) values of 3.37; -18.34; 166.26%; and 24.09 nm. From the experiments that have been carried out, it can be concluded that optical brightening agent (OBA) can increase the value of optical properties on paper. However, if the dose of optical brightening agent (OBA) used is high, then the resulting increase in value will decrease even less, so it is not recommended to use optical brightening agent (OBA) at high doses because it will only cause factory costs to increase.
