ABSTRACT
Methyl chloride is one of the materials that is needed in the silicon industry, as an ingredient in agricultural medicines, as an ingredient in the synthetic rubber industry, as a raw material for making methyl cellulose, making fuel additives (Tetra Ethyl Lead), and can be used as an ingredient in floor cleaner industry. The need for methyl chloride increases over time. The increase in demand for methyl chloride is 1.193,37 ton per year based on data from the BPS (Badan Pusat Statistika) for the last 5 years. However, until now there has not been a single Indonesian company that produces methyl chloride, so domestic needs still rely on imports. The increasing need for imports will reduce the source of foreign exchange for the country. Therefore, the construction of a methyl chloride plant is indispensable. The purpose of this preliminary design is to get an overview of calculations regarding methyl chloride factories in Indonesia with the main design is a distillation column (T-102) which serves to increase the purity of methyl chloride. The type of distillation column used is the sieve tray with the diameter of coloumn is 103,819 inch and the height of coloumn is 372,638 inch. The operating conditions in the distillation column are temperature of 260,048 K and an operating pressure of 1,9 atm. Plant economic analysis is carried out to determine the feasibility of the factory to be built. Based on the results of the economic feasibility analysis of the factory, the methyl chloride plant is feasible to build with a 2,17-year PBP, 58% BEP, 22.741% IRR, and 34,986% ROI.
