ABSTRACT
The incidence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection may lead to neurological impairment, causing cognitive and behavioral disorders. Cognitive impairment in people living with HIV is frequently associated with various factors such as age, level of education, antiretroviral therapy utilization, and opportunistic infections. This study aims to determine the factors associated with cognitive impairment in HIV/AIDS patients at Arifin Achmad General Hospital in Riau Province. Through a consecutive sampling method, 43 respondents who visited the Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) clinic were selected for this cross-sectional study. Data were obtained through the MoCA-Ina questionnaire and medical records. Results from the MoCA-Ina questionnaire revealed a prevalence of cognitive impairment was 83,7%, with the most common cognitive domain affected being memory (95,3%), followed by visuospatial (76,7%), attention (69,8%), and language (65,1%). There was a significant relationship between the level of education and cognitive impairment (p=0,038; OR=9,429; 95% CI 1,023-86,857). Furthermore, there was no significant relationship between age, gender, HIV stage, duration since diagnose, type of ARV therapy, therapy duration, and CD4 levels with cognitive impairment. In conclusion, cognitive impairment is highly prevalent among HIV/AIDS patients at Arifin Achmad General Hospital in Riau Province, with education level emerging as the influential factor.
