This research is motivated by the importance of of mathematical understanding abilities for students. Understanding is a fundamental ability that students must have, but in reality, students' mathematical understanding abilities still need to be improved. It can be seen from previous studies of researchers' interviews with mathematics teachers in several schools. The solution to improve students' mathematical understanding abilities is to apply the Discovery Learning (DL) learning model. Several previous studies explain that the DL model can have a good influence on improving students' mathematical understanding abilities. Based on this, this research aims to develop student worksheets based on the DL model on statistics material to facilitate students' mathematical understanding skills that are valid and practical. The teaching materials developed are student worksheets.
The development of this student worksheet uses the ADDIE development model, which consists of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The student worksheet that was developed was validated by three validators. This research involved students from SMPN 2 Rumbio Jaya consisting of 3 students from the IX class as one-to-one trials, nine students from the IX.B class as small group trials, and 20 studentsfrom the IX.A as significant group trial subjects.
The instruments used in data collection in this research consisted of student worksheet validation sheets and student response questionnaires. The analysis results at the stage include: a) needs analysis, namely conducting interviews with teachers and observations regarding students' mathematical understanding abilities and worksheets used in the learning process. It was found that students' understanding abilities were still low and the teaching materials used by teachers had not been developed independently; b) analysis of material and curriculum, namely identifying, detailing and compiling statistical material which is material for VIII class even semester in the 2013 curriculum in a relevant manner, researchers analyze basic competencies related to statistical material, the analysis is carried out as a reference for compiling competency achievements from the basic competencies that have been selected c) analysis of students, which is carried out by observing and interviewing students as well studies related to students' mathematical understanding abilities. It was found that students still experience difficulties in solving mathematics problems.
The design stage is a researcher's activity in designing by creating an initial format consisting of four meetings with the scope of material, namely: a) Analyzing data, b) Determining the average of a group of data, c) Regarding the median and mode of a group of data, d) Regarding the size of the spread of a data group. In the development stage, the validation results of student worksheet meet the very valid criteria. The score for the validation results of student worksheet is an average of 88.8%. Both from the language aspect student with
an average of 87.7%, the display aspect with an average of 85%, the presentation aspect with an average of 92.4%, the material aspect with an average of 93.3%, the discovery learning aspect with an average of an average of 88.9% and the mathematical understanding ability aspect with an average of 84.9%. Furthermore, the student worksheets were revised based on suggestions from the validator followed by a one to one test, it was found that the student worksheets were generally good and could be tested on small groups to determine the readability of the student worksheets.
Furthermore, the implementation of student worksheets at the small group stage showed that the results of data analysis obtained met very practical criteria with an average score of 86.5%. Student worksheets that had been revised based on suggestions from students were tested again in a large group test. The results of the practicality of large group trials through student response questionnaires met the very practical criteria with an average score of 86.3%, meaning that student worksheets using the discovery learning model can facilitate students' mathematical understanding abilities.
