Prarancangan Pabrik Asam Benzoat Dengan Proses Oksidasi Toluen Dengan Desain Alat Utama Crystalizer
Benzoic acid is a chemical compound with the formula C6H5COOH which is a simple cyclic aromatic compound (C6H¬¬6) linked to a carboxylic group (COOH). This product is a chemical in the form of a solid organic acid in the form of white flakes, flammable, soluble in alcohol, ether, volatile and explosive. Benzoic acid can be synthesized from various organic substances such as benzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde, and toluene. Benzoic acid with the trade name benzenecarboxylic acid or carboxybenzene is the simplest aromatic carboxylic acid. Benzoic acid can be used as a raw material in the fields of cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food, or as a basic ingredient for other chemical products. The need for benzoic acid in Indonesia is still met through import activities. The benzoic acid factory is planned to operate for 330 days with a capacity of 20,000 tons per year which will be established in the Gresik Industrial Area, East Java. The raw materials used in designing the benzoic acid plant are toluene and oxygen using the Toluene Oxidation process. The main tool design in this factory design is a crystallizer which functions to form benzoic acid products with the by-product water. The crystallizer operates at a pressure of 1 atm and a temperature of 32,2 ͦ C. Economic analysis on the design of this factory shows that the benzoic acid factory using the Toluene Oxidation process is feasible to establish with a Return on Investment (ROI) value of 24.55%, Pay Out Period (POP) of 3.5 years, Internal Rate of Return (IRR ) of 38%, and Break Event Point (BEP) of 58%.
