Biologi Sycanus Spp. Predator Ulat Api Dengan Mangsa Alternatif Ulat Grayak Jagung Spodoptera Frugiperda J. E. Smith (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)
Sycanus spp. is a common predator in oil palm plantations. These predatory insects have a variety of prey, and the level of attack from Setothosea asigna can decrease production by up to 40%. This study aimed to obtain biological information on Sycanus spp. using the larvae of Spodoptera frugiperda as an alternative prey in the laboratory. The research was conducted at the Pest Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Riau University, Bina Widya Campus, Pekanbaru, from December 2022 to June 2023. The observation parameters for the growth and development of Sycanus spp. in the laboratory included egg stage, nymph stage, adult stage, and life cycle.S. frugiperda larvaecan beused as alternativeprey to propagate Sycanus spp. The biology of Sycanus spp. reared with S. frugiperda prey includes cylindrical-shaped eggs. The average number of eggs produced is 177.15 with a hatching percentage of 74.68%. After an incubation period of 14.4 days, the eggs hatch into nymphs. The nymph stages progress with the lengths of instar stages I, II, III, IV, and V being 20.02, 14.44, 11.63, 12.79, and 19.52 days, respectively. The lifespan of male adults is 46.19 days, and the lifespan of female adults is 48.62 days. A Female adults can produce 1-4 egg groups during one life cycle. The time required for Sycanus spp. to complete one life cycle is 139.19 days for male adults and 141.62 days for female adults.
