Adsorpsi Methylene Blue Menggunakan Lempung Maredan Teraktivasi Naoh
Natural clay had the potential to be used as an adsorbent due to its large surface area and active sites that supported the adsorption of methylene blue. One of the abundant clay sources in Indonesia was located in Desa Maredan, Kecamatan Tualang, Kabupaten Siak. The adsorption capability of Maredan clay could be enhanced through activation. Activation using NaOH was expected to increase the surface area of the clay and the number of active sites. This study aimed to determine the adsorption efficiency and capacity of Maredan clay in adsorbing methylene blue and to identify the appropriate adsorption kinetic model. The method used in this study was batch adsorption of methylene blue with variations in NaOH concentration (0.5, 1, 2, 3, and 4 M), adsorbent dosage (0.05, 0.06, 0.07, 0.08, 0.09, and 0.1 g), pHpzc (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12), pH (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12), and contact time (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 minutes). The surface morphology of the adsorbent was analyzed using SEM-EDS. The functional groups on the adsorbent were analyzed using FTIR instruments. UV-Vis spectrophotometer analysis was used to determine the absorbance of methylene blue before and after adsorption. The optimum methylene blue adsorption was obtained at a NaOH activator concentration of 1 M with an adsorption capacity of 42.6748 mg/g and an efficiency of 68.78%. The pHpzc condition was obtained at a pH of 6.2, and the clay surface was negatively charged above the pHpzc. The optimum adsorption parameters for NaOH-activated Maredan clay were obtained with an adsorbent dosage of 0.1 g, pH 10, and a contact time of 30 minutes, with an adsorption capacity of 42.2331 mg/g and an adsorption efficiency of 84.97%, showing an increase in adsorption capacity compared to non-activated Maredan clay, which had an adsorption capacity of 31.8830 mg/g. The adsorption kinetics model followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics model with an R² of 0.9988 and a reaction rate constant of 0.0094 g/mg per minute, assuming that adsorption was influenced by the availability of active sites and adsorbate concentration. Based on the study, it was concluded that activation using NaOH on Maredan clay could enhance its adsorption capability for methylene blue.
