The Indonesian language plays a strategic role in strengthening national identity and enhancing the nation's competitiveness at the global level. In the context of international relations, the recognition of Indonesian as an official language of the UNESCO General Conference represents a significant step to expand Indonesia’s cultural influence and diplomacy worldwide. This effort is supported by the large number of speakers, the relatively simple language structure, and consistent government policies promoting Indonesian through various international forums and educational programs for foreign speakers.
This study aims to provide a general overview of the role and position of the Indonesian language at the international level and its relevance in the UNESCO General Conference; to identify the factors influencing the submission process of Indonesian as an official language, including policies, international support, and challenges faced; and to analyze the efforts already undertaken and ongoing by the Indonesian government to promote this recognition. The research employs qualitative methods with a literature review approach, policy analysis, and examination of official reports from relevant government agencies and UNESCO.
The results indicate that the success of recognizing Indonesian as an official language of the UNESCO General Conference is the outcome of comprehensive and continuous language diplomacy. The Indonesian government effectively utilized formal and informal diplomacy, cultural promotion, and international community support to convince UNESCO of the importance of Indonesian on the global stage. This recognition not only enhances the prestige of the Indonesian language but also strengthens Indonesia's position in international diplomacy and opens wider opportunities for cooperation in education, culture, and linguistics.
