ABSTRACT
This study aims to describe the oil palm farming business, the role of extension in making oil palm farmers independent and the empowerment and independence of oil palm farmers. This study used a survey method. The population of this study were independent oil palm farmers. Sampling in this study using simple random sampling with a sample size of 90 independent farmers. Data were collected using observation techniques, questionnaires, interviews, and notes. The data that had been collected were analyzed using descriptive analysis and a Likert scale. The results showed that independent smallholders had not been able to apply the principles of ISPO (Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil) and were still categorized as “not good”, and extension services in Kampar district were still categorized as “very insufficient role” with an average score of 1.21. And also the empowerment of oil palm farmers in implementing ISPO in the Kampar district is categorized as “very helpless” with an average score of 1.25 and the independence of oil palm farmers in implementing ISPO in the Kampar district is categorized as “very less independent” with an average score of 1.50.
