Identifying Taboo Words In The Tv Series The Umbrella Academy 2

This study investigated the types and functions of taboo words uttered by the characters in the TV Series the Umbrella Academy 2. This study used Azzaro’s (2005) theory which consists of five types of taboo words; mental, physical, religious, scatological, and sexual, and two main functions of taboo words; swearing and insults. This study used a descriptive qualitative method, and the data sources are the Umbrella academy 2 series, which has ten episodes. The result showed 379 taboo words found in the series, where religious terms were the highest types of taboo words with 159 (41.16%) utterances while mental terms were the least used with 27 (7.12%) utterances. Swearing is the most frequently used function with 267 (70.45%) utterances, while insult became the least used with 112 (29.55%) utterances. Moreover, the characters in this series uttered taboo words mainly to express their feelings or emotions toward a situation or a particular person.
