Vocabulary Learning Strategies Used By The English Department Students Of Universitas Riau
Throughout the academic year, students employed various strategies for acquiring new vocabulary. Unfortunately, it is still unknown which strategy is applied more frequently. The purpose of this study is to investigate the type of vocabulary learning strategies used by students of the English Department at Universitas Riau. This research used a quantitative research method, and 93 undergraduate students of the English Department at Universitas Riau participated in this study. The Statistical Package of Social Science (SPSS, version 25) was used to analyse 40 questionnaire items that were adapted from Rabadi’s (2016) based on Schmitt’s (1997) taxonomy. The findings revealed that the students used vocabulary learning strategies in a variety of ways, ranging from the most frequent to the least frequent; they are determination strategies (M=3.67), metacognitive strategies (M=3.51), memory strategies (M=3.42), social strategies (M=3.32), cognitive strategies (M=3.22). The descriptive analysis of the study showed that students were “medium” level strategy users (M=3.43). Overall, two strategies have been frequently used by the students, mainly Discover the definition of new terms by using an English–Indonesian dictionary and “Discover the definition of new terms by using an Indonesian-English dictionary”. In conclusion, it showed that students mostly find it easier to use the bilingual dictionary as a tool to find a list of words of an English language independently because of its easy access, quickness, and portability.
