An Analysis Of The Grammatical Errors In Writing Recount Texts Made By The First-Year Students Of MAN 2 Kota Pekanbaru
The objective of this research was aimed to analyze find out the types and sources of error made by the first-year students of MAN 2 Kota Pekanbaru. The types of error were analyzed according to the theory by Azar (1989), meanwhile the causes of error were analyzed using the theory proposed by Richards and Schmidt (2002). The research design was descriptive research that focused on quantitative approach. The sample for this research included 27 students as representatives of the first-year students of MAN 2 Kota Pekanbaru. A written test was used as the primary data. The collected data were analysed by three raters and the results were calculated using Microsoft Excel 2019. The findings of this study revealed thsat the students made 191 errors with the highest error was in the Verb Tense (19%) and the lowest error was in the Incomplete Sentence (1%). The causes of the error were Intralingual Error (63%) and Interlingual Error (37%). Furthermore, in order to be good at using grammar especially at writing, several recommendations
were given to the teachers and the students, such as the teacher needs to
explain more clearly and pay attention to students who do not
understand the explanation about incorrect verb changing and incorrect
generalization. Students should learn English by getting themselves
familiar with English, such as reading more English texts, listening to
English conversations, and paying attention to the grammatical rules and
patterns while doing so.
