A Study On The Ability In Paraphrasing A Paragraph By The Third-Year Students Of The English Study Program Universitas Riau
This descriptive research aimed to find out the ability of the third-year students of the English study program in paraphrasing a paragraph. 39 students of the third-year students in the English study program Universitas Riau in the academic year 2021/2022 were the sample of this research. The sample was chosen by using the cluster random sampling technique. The data of this research were the performance of students in paraphrasing gained through a test. It was a writing test that consisted of a paragraph that should be paraphrased by the samples within 60 minutes. The scoring was done by three raters and focused on four paraphrasing aspects: lexical similarity, syntactic similarity, semantic completeness, and writing style. The findings showed that the students’ ability in paraphrasing a paragraph was at a good level with an average score of 75.34. The highest score was sentence structure criteria with an average score of 77.25 and the lowest score was style criteria with an average score of 72.40.
