ABSTRACT
Sugar palm (Arenga pinnata) is one type of tree from the palm family that grows in tropical forest areas with multifunctional tree benefits. Local wisdom is the original knowledge of cultural ancestral values. The local wisdom of the people of Bulu Mario Village is very inherent in the context of community relations with forests This study aims to determine local wisdom in the use of sugar palm, in Bulu Mario Village, Sipirok District, South Tapanuli Regency, and obtain information about factors that affect the potential of palm plants in Bulu Mario Village. This research was prepared using a purposive sampling method, namely a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews and observation methods. Interviews were conducted with 32 respondents and analyzed descriptively qualitatively. The results of the study show that the local wisdom of the people in Bulu Mario Village has implications for the activities of artisans of local crystal sugar products, maragat, and marsialapari (mutual cooperation) traditions in maintaining the authenticity of Batak cultural values. The Batak Angkola community applies customary law based on Dalihan na Tolu in preserving the forest. Factors that affect the potential of palm plants are the altitude of the place and rainfall. The presence of monkeys is considered a pest that takes palm sap from inside the lead container. Hedgehogs and wild boars are pests that attack palm growth at seedling age, resulting in palm oil growth production is not optimal.
