An Analysis Of Code-Switching On ‘Breakout’ Net Tv
This study, which employs a descriptive qualitative methodology,
intends to investigate the types and purposes of code-switching employed in (by
hosts and guests) Breakout NET TV. This study applied Poplack's (1980) theory
for the types of code-switching, which consists of three types of code-switching:
intra-sentential switching, inter-sentential switching, and tag-switching and
Hoffman's (2014) theory for the function of code-switching, which consists of
seven functions of code-switching: talking about a specific topic, quoting
somebody else, giving emphasis, interjection, repetition used for clarification, the
intention of clarifying the speech content for the interlocutor and expressing
group identity. (Hosts and guests) Breakout NET TV is a research data source.
The finding showed that 306 data for code-switching were discovered in Breakout
NET TV, with intra-sentential for types are having the highest occurrence rate
with 203 data (66.33%) and giving emphasis with 199 data (65.03%) being the
highest appearance in functions. Therefore, it was determined that code-switching
was used by Breakout NET TV (hosts and guests) to emphasis the words and
sentences uttered.
Key Words: Code-Switching, Breakout NET TV.
