Investigating The Frequency And The Reasons For Using English By English Study Program Students Of Fkip Universitas Riau

This study intends at investigating how often and for what reasons English Study Program Students using English. The research is a mixed study applying combined quantitative and qualitative methods, with 118 English Department students from the Universitas Riau's class of 2019 serving as the population. The researcher used two instruments: questionnaires and interviews to collect the data. Questionnaires were delivered to 54 students online via the WhatsApp application using a Google form. After analyzing the data, 10 respondents were selected randomly for an interview over WhatsApp phone. To analyze the data, the researcher used Microsoft Excel 2013 and SPSS version 25. The findings revealed that English education students often used English with an overall score of 2.51 and a percentage of 69.1, which is classified into the “often” category. Their reasons for using English, are to practice skills, to communicate, to be an English student, to get a partner, and to get travel around the world.
