An Analysis Of Rhetorical Move In The Research Article Abstracts
The aim of this research is to investigate the realization of the rhetorical
move structure and language features in research article abstracts in the fields of
socioeconomic, mathematics, and engineering. The study utilizes Hyland's (2000)
rhetorical framework as the analytical framework for analysis. The research
methodology employed is descriptive qualitative analysis. The dataset comprises
36 research article abstracts obtained from three journals published in 2021. The
findings indicate that among the 36 abstracts analyzed, only 8 (22.2%) abstracts
align with Hyland's model of rhetorical move structure, while the remaining 28
(77.8%) abstracts deviate from the model. Notably, the engineering field exhibits a
higher degree of alignment with the model. Additionally, the use of simple present
tense is prevalent across the entire corpus. In conclusion, the majority of the
abstracts analyzed in this study adhere to the purpose, method, and product moves.
Furthermore, there were no significant differences in the linguistic features
observed across the three disciplines. These findings have implications for
educational practices, suggesting the need to incorporate instruction on the
rhetorical structure and linguistic characteristics of research article abstracts in
academic writing courses.
