A Study On Vocabulary Mastery Of The Second Grade Students Of SMPN 34 Pekanbaru
English is a global language that is presently the official or dominant language in more than 60 nations, Lucantoni (2006). English is one of the foreign languages taught at junior and senior high schools, as well as colleges, in Indonesia. Based on the background above, the problem is formulated as follows “how is the vocabulary mastery of the second grade students of SMPN 34 Pekanbaru?”. And the objective of the research is to find out the vocabulary mastery of the second grade students of SMPN34 Pekanbaru. The research design used in this research is quantitative method and used descriptive design. The researcher selected class 8.2, 8.3, and 8.7 of SMPN 34 Pekanbaru as the sample. In doing the research, the researcher gave the test to the students to see their vocabulary mastery in choosing the appropriate word to answer the questions. In the test, the researcher conducted 40 multiple choice questions of vocabulary. Based on data analysis of the test, students vocabulary mastery of the second grade students of SMPN 34 Pekanbaru is in average category (71.04). This indicates that, when compared to the level of vocabulary mastery that should be attained by students, the second grade students of SMPN 34 Pekanbaru have an enough average level of competency in English.
