Sebaran Bakteri Escherichia Coli Dan Hubungannya Dengan Arus Laut Di Perairan Rupat Utara
ABSTRACT
The waters of North Rupat are affected by various anthropogenic activities in
coastal areas such as port activities, settlements and coastal areas which can have
an impact on the water quality. Microbiological water quality can be determinated
and indicated by the presence of Escherichia coli which is a dangerous pathogenic
bacteria. Distribution of Escherichia coli in the waters might be due to the
movement of ocean currents. The objectives of this study were to calculate the
density of E. coli, to describe the circulation patterns of ocean currents and to
analyze the distribution of E. coli according to circulation patterns in North Rupat
waters. This survey study was carried out in 3 stations, namely Station 1 at the port
of Tanjung Medang, station 2 in the community settlement of Teluk Rhu and station
3 in the coastal tourism area of Tanjung Punak. The density of E. coli was
enumerated by using the Most Probable Number (MPN) method. While the
movement of currents and the distribution of E. coli in the waters was simulated
using the Mike 21 application. The highest density of E. coli was obtained at high
tide in station 2 which ranged from 4-95 MPN/100 mL, while the highest density
of E. coli at low tide in station 3 which ranged from 6-10MPN/100 mL. The current
speed and circulation pattern of ocean currents at high tide ranged from 0-1.2 m/s
to the southeast and at low tide the current speed ranged from 0-1.0 m/s to the west.
The distribution of E. coli at the highest tide moves predominantly to the southeast,
following the direction of the longshore currents during high tide. Meanwhile, at
the lowest ebb due to weakness of current speed the bacteria was scattered around
the source of the pollutant or only moved in a short distance.
