Identifying Speaking Difficulties Of English Study Program Students Of Language And Arts Departments At Universitas Riau
This study aims to identify students’ difficulties in speaking English based
on linguistic aspects. A quantitative approach was applied to this descriptive study. The data
were gathered through a quantitative method by distributing a questionnaire with 30
statement items. Data is scored using a Likerts Scale with five choices; Strongly Agree (SA),
Agree (A), Neutral (N), Strongly Disaggre (SD), and Disagree (D), The study focused
on identifying students’ difficulties in speaking English based on linguistic aspects. The
sample of this study involved 117 respondents of a fifth-semester student in the English study
program at Universitas Riau. The findings showed that the percentage of students’ difficulties
in speaking English based on linguistic aspects, the students have difficulties in vocabulary at
about 34.4%, pronunciation at around 33.6%, and grammar at 32%. It can be inferred that the
student’s difficulties in speaking English are mostly in the vocabulary aspect. That means
when speaking using the English language, the students still lack the vocabulary needed. It is
very difficult for them to choose the proper words to say what they want to say.
