Until now, approximately 94% of Indonesia's healthcare equipment needs are still fulfilled by imported products. The import value of healthcare equipment in 2017 was approximately Rp20.7 trillion and increased to Rp24.3 trillion in 2018. By 2022, the import value of healthcare equipment in Indonesia reached Rp40 trillion. One of the healthcare devices that is imported is bone implants. The use of metals in implants is favored due to their strong mechanical properties. However, in practice, metal materials have a weak bond with bones and can lead to the release of harmful ions into the body if used in the long term. Metal implants are often coated with biomaterials such as hydroxyapatite (HA) to ensure their clinical durability. The suboptimal mechanical properties of HA coatings necessitate the addition of materials capable of improving the mechanical strength of the HA layer. One of the materials that can be used is by adding poly ԑ-caprolactone (PCL) as a composite in the coating of HA on the surface of stainless steel 316L.
The objectives of this research are determine the optimal conditions for PCL/HA coating on the surface of Stainless Steel 316L using the dip-coating method and Response Surface Methodology. Determine the effect of Stainless Steel 316L surface pretreatment and the addition of PCL on the strength of the coating and corrosion resistance.
Substrate pretreatment involves sandpaper abrasion, ultrasonic cleaning at different sonication temperatures (45, 50, 55 ˚C), and the formation of a Na4CrO4 interlayer on the substrate surface through alkali treatment and heat treatment. The coating process is carried out using the dip-coating method, and the PCL/HA coating is dried for different drying times (10, 12, and 14 hours). Response Surface Methodology (RSM) is employed in this study to model the response, which includes shear strength and corrosion resistance.
The addition of PCL to the hydroxyapatite biomaterial coating on the surface of stainless steel 316L significantly affects shear strength and corrosion resistance. The greater the PCL/HA ratio used, the higher the values of shear strength and corrosion resistance. Based on the RSM, the equations for shear strength (Y1) and corrosion resistance (Y2) are as follows: Y1 = 27,4 + 5,41X1 + 9,35X2 + 3,14X3 + 11,24X1X3 – 15,85X12 +11,91X22,Y2 = 2275,5 + 1029X1 + 2506,18X2 – 559,26X3 + 1811,33X22. The optimum process conditions for sonication temperature, PCL/HA ratio, and drying time are 54.7oC, 39.97%, and 10.68 hours, respectively. The optimum values for shear strength and corrosion resistance are 36.98 MPa and 7521.51 ohm.cm2, respectively.
