In the 21st century, students are required to be able to develop life skills and soft skills in the learning process, including having critical thinking skills. This critical thinking ability is very necessary to train students to be able to think logically, answer problems well, and be rational in making decisions. Therefore, it is necessary to innovate teaching materials to create an interesting and enjoyable learning process, including by developing technology-based teaching materials so that Students can understand learning material effectively and efficiently even though they do not interact directly with lecturers.
E-Handouts are in the form of presenting independent learning materials which are arranged systematically into the smallest learning units to achieve certain learning objectives. The advantage is that they can be presented in an electronic format where each learning activity in it is connected with links as navigation which makes students interactive with the program. The development of E-Handouts is combined with indicators of students' critical thinking abilities which are expected to be able to improve students' critical thinking abilities and learning outcomes. The development of this E-Handout was carried out in aquatic ecology courses, especially in freshwater and marine ecosystems.
This research aims to determine the quality of the E-Handout on freshwater and marine ecosystem material and its influence on critical thinking skills and learning outcomes of Riau University Biology Education students who take aquatic ecology courses. This research uses the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) model. The analysis stage consists of curriculum analysis, analysis of student needs, analysis of teaching materials and material analysis. The design stage consists of designing learning tools and designing E-Handouts, the development stage consists of validity testing, teacher practicality testing, limited one-on-one testing. Meanwhile, in the implementation phase, a large-scale test was carried out in the form of applying E-Handout material on freshwater and marine ecosystems in the lecture process.
The results of research on the validity of the E-Handout in three aspects, namely the material aspect obtained an average result of 92.85%, the software aspect 93.39, the usage aspect 100%, the feasibility aspect 93.05% and the linguistic aspect an average of 91.67 %. Then, the practicality results of E- Handout in the usage aspect got an average of 80.52%, the time efficiency aspect was 83.94%, and the average benefit aspect was 83.38%.
The results of research at the implementation stage show that there is a significant effect of using E-Handouts to improve critical thinking skills with a significance value of 0.02 < 0.05 and an increase in student learning outcomes indicated by a significance value of 0.01 < 0.05 in each control class and experimental class.
