ABSTRACT
This research was conducted at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Riau. The objectives of the study are: 1) To determine the activities of students using smartphones, 2) To understand students' views on smartphones, and 3) To identify the motives behind students' smartphone usage. The research method used is descriptive quantitative, with data collection techniques through Google Forms and documentation. The study involved 192 respondents using Proportional Random Sampling techniques. The results of the study indicate a high level of smartphone usage among students, reflecting significant dependence on smartphones in daily life. The main motive for using smartphones in the entertainment aspect shows that 48% of respondents use smartphones for entertainment and communication with friends. In the social interaction aspect, 59.9% of respondents use smartphones to communicate with family and friends. In the personal identity aspect, 55.2% of respondents use smartphones to seek information to adapt to their surroundings, while in the information aspect, 55.7% of respondents use smartphones to obtain information about people around them and the outside world. Smartphones are widely used for communication, entertainment, and information access. However, this intensive use is also associated with increased anxiety and stress among students. Thus, smartphones have become essential devices that support various aspects of student life, from personal needs to academic and social requirements.
