Trash Talk Pada Pemain Game Mobile Legends Bang-Bang (Studi Hiperrealitas-Diksional pada Pemain Game Online di Pekanbaru)
Mobile Legends Bang-Bang is one of the most popular games in Indonesia with more than 500 million downloaders on Play store App in 2024. Unfortunately, though a lot of gamers engage in trash talk when they are playing the game. The purpose of this research is: to identify the factors that motivate Mobile Legends Bang-Bang players to engage in trash talk and the impact of such trash talk on social relations after the game ends. The benefits of this research are twofold, the theoretical benefit includes understanding that trash talk creates a simulated reality within online games, the process of interpreting the meaning of trash talk, contributing to theories about virtual reality, and expanding knowledge about symbols in virtual interactions. The practical benefit includes providing insights into trash talk, enhancing understanding of its consequences, and serving as an evaluation material for society and the government. This research is analyzed using Jean Baudrillar’s hyperreality theory, which views hyperreality as providing an overview of virtual interactions in online games, where interactions involve the use of specific diction in the form of trash talk. It is also supported by George Herbert Mead’s theory of symbolic interactionism to interpret trash talk as a symbol used by players in their interactions. This research is conducted using a qualitative method with a hyperreality study approach that dictionally represents interactions between players. The methods of observation, interviewing, and documentation are used in the data collection process. The Mobile Legends Bang-Bang game application has capabilities that allow users to text and voice chat with one another.
The study's findings indicate that there are several of reasons why players of Mobile Legends Bang-Bang engage in trash talk, including blunders made by teammates, influence from the other team, unstable internet connections, negative player influence, and disruptions during gameplay. The words commonly used by Mobile Legends Bang-Bang players in trash talk are highly diverse, each reflecting the emotional state of the players when facing in-game situations. Additionally, players’ behavior also varies based on gender, as it relates to how Mobile Legends Bang-Bang player treat others, whether of the same or different gender. This is influenced by the game’s combat theme, which is typically associated with games favored by males. After the game is over, players that indulge in trash talk may get consequences, such as being asked to play a one-on-one match, growing habituated to using it in real life, or feeling guilty.
