ABSTRACT
The problem of leaf litter and ketapang twig accumulation at the Faculty of
Engineering, University of Riau, has prompted innovative efforts in its
management. One approach that can be taken is to apply TOSS (Waste
Management Technology at the Source) in managing this waste. This study aims
to analyze the physical characteristics of biopellets produced from the TOSS
biodrying process of ketapang leaves and branches, measure the concentration of
CO and NO₂ gases produced from burning the pellets using a gasification stove,
and measure their combustion rate. The variations in leaf-to-branch ratio used
were 70%: 30%, 50% : 50%, and 30% : 70%. The characteristics of the biopellets
were tested according to SNI 8675-2018 standards, including moisture content,
volatile matter content, ash content, fixed carbon content, calorific value, and
density. Additionally, the concentration of CO and NO₂ gas emissions from pellet
combustion was measured and compared with the quality standards set by
Ministry of Health Regulation No. 2 of 2023. The research results showed that
variations in raw material composition affect the physical characteristics of
biopellets. The best biopellet characteristics for KP3 were achieved with a 30%
twig : 70% leaves, with moisture content (4.60%), ash content (4.97%), volatile
matter content (68.95%), fixed carbon content (21.48%), calorific value (4,664.13
kcal/g), and density (1.15 g/cm³). These values meet SNI 8675:2018 standards.
The combustion characteristics of KP3 biopellets include ignition time (10
minutes), combustion time (41 minutes), and combustion rate (5.29 g/minute) at a
combustion temperature of 793°C. The concentrations of CO and NO₂ from the
combustion of KP3 biopellets in the TLUD gasification stove are 0.530 ppm and
267.22 μg/m³, respectively. Based on these values, the CO concentration meets
the indoor air quality standards specified in Ministry of Health Regulation No. 2
of 2023.
