Sintesis Dan Karakterisasi Karbon Aktif Dari Tandan Kosong Sawit Sebagai Adsorben Logam Cu
ABSTRACT
Empty Palm Fruit Bunch (EFB) is a by-product of the palm oil industry that is
abundant in Riau Province. The high cellulose content in EFB has the potential to
be developed as a basic material for making activated carbon, which is the type of
adsorbent most widely developed for heavy metal adsorption. This study aims to
analyze the best carbonization temperature and time on the quality of activated
carbon and the adsorption capacity of EFB activated carbon, as well as to analyze
the characteristics of EFB adsorbent using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM),
Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET), Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR), X-Ray
Diffraction (XRD) tests. The research method was carried out by varying the
carbonization temperature by 400°C, 500°C, and 600°C and the carbonization time
for 20 minutes, 40 minutes, 60 minutes then activated using 0,5 M NaOH solution.
Furthermore, the results of EFB activated carbon were subjected to proximate
analysis according to SNI 06-3730-1995 to determine the best variation then the
adsorption process was carried out on artificial Cu metal waste. The results of the
study showed that the best activated carbon came from a carbonization temperature
of 600°C with a time of 60 minutes with a Cu metal removal efficiency of 94,31%
adsorption capacity of 4,715 mg/g. The results of the SEM test showed that the EFB
activated carbon after activation had large and open pores then closed again after
the Cu metal adsorption process which indicated the absorption of Cu metal. Based
on the BET test, it has a surface area of 207,883 m2/g with an average pore size of
1,20 nm. The results of the FTIR characteristics obtained the -OH, C=C, C-O, C≡C
groups on the EFB activated carbon after activation and there was a shift in wave
numbers after the adsorption process. The results of the XRD test, the degree of
crystallinity of the EFB activated carbon before activation and after activation were
9,723% and 21,89%.
