This research was motivated by the issue of student independence. The presence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) such as ChatGPT is seen as an alternative solution to problems related to student independence, for instance, students’ dependence on peers when completing assignments due to lack of understanding, and confusion in finding clear and comprehensible information. Students who lack confidence in their own abilities tend to procrastinate, which can lead to stress and ultimately impact their independence.
The research problem is formulated as: Is there an influence of using Artificial Intelligence (AI) ChatGPT on the independence of students at FKIP Universitas Riau? The purpose of this study is to determine the influence of using AI ChatGPT on student independence. The benefit of this research is to provide new insights and serve as a reference for future research.
The research method used is quantitative with a descriptive statistical approach. The study was conducted at FKIP Universitas Riau, located at Campus Bina Widya KM.12.5, Simpang Baru, Tampan District, Pekanbaru, Riau, Indonesia. A questionnaire consisting of 20 statements was used as the research instrument. The population was 4,077 students, and the sample was determined using the Slovin

formula with a 10% margin of error, resulting in 98 respondents from the 2021, 2022, and 2023 student cohorts.
The instrument test results show that the validity test for variables (X) and (Y) yielded an r-count greater than the r-table, indicating the items were valid. The reliability test showed Cronbach’s Alpha values of 0.869 for variable (X) and 0.854 for variable (Y), which are greater than 0.6, indicating high reliability.
Simple linear regression analysis was used as it involves one independent variable predicting one dependent variable. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality test yielded an Asymp. Sig. value of 0.200 > 0.05, indicating the data is normally distributed. The linearity test showed a Deviation from Linearity significance value of 0.522 > 0.05, indicating a linear relationship between variables.
The F-test (simultaneous hypothesis test) yielded an F-count of 11.395 with a significance value of 0.001, while the F-table was 3.94. Since F-count > F-table and the significance value < 0.05, the null hypothesis (H₀) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Hₐ) is accepted. This indicates that the use of AI ChatGPT has a significant simultaneous influence on the independence of FKIP Universitas Riau students.
The coefficient of determination (R Square) was found to be 0.106 or 10.6%, indicating that the independent variable (use of AI ChatGPT) affects the dependent variable (student independence) by 10.6%—a low but definite influence. The correlation coefficient (R) was 0.326, indicating a weak relationship. The remaining 89.4% is influenced by other variables not examined in this study.
