Using Spelling Bee To Improve Reading Comprehension Of The Third Year Students Of Smp N 6 Tambang In Narrative Texts
This study aims to find out whether spelling bee can improve the reading comprehension of the third year students of SMP N 6 Tambang in narrative texts. This is an action research, it consist of four stages which are planning, action, observation and reflection. The subject of this research was class IX 1 of SMP N 6 Tambang. This research was conducted from 22th October 2013 until 20th November 2013.The writer collected the quantitative data by using multiple choice tests which are consist of 20 questions in each test and he collected qualitative data by using observation sheets and field notes. Before applying spelling bee, the writer started by giving pre-test to know the students’ base score in comprehending narrative text before they had been taught by using spelling bee. The average of pre-test result was 48.5. After conducting pre-test, the writer began applying spelling bee in teaching learning process. And then, the writer gave summative test at the end of cycle 1 but the result was not satisfying because the average score was 68.9. Because of that, the writer decided to continue to cycle 2. The result of post test after the second cycle was satisfying because the students’ average score was higher than MMC, It was 78.21. From the result, the writer assumed that this research is quite successful because the students reading comprehension in narrative texts have improved.
