Using Videos To Improve Listening Comprehension In Narrative Texts Of The Second Year Students Of SMP Rusqah Pekanbaru
This was a classroom action research which aimed to know whether the use of videos can improve the students’ listening ability. Listening plays important role in the language learning, because by listening the learners are able to gain information or knowledge from any spoken media. As an important skill in English, the role of an English teacher is quite needed to give attractive learning methods or strategies in teaching English. The subject of this study was 29 students of the second year of SMP Rusqah Pekanbaru. The general objectives of this research are; to know whether using videos could improve the students’ listening comprehension; to know to what extent using videos could improve the students’ listening comprehension; and to know to what extent the progress of the students’ listening activities, especially for the second year students of SMP Rusqah Pekanbaru. The Criteria of Successful Action of this research was ≥ 76. It was based on the MMC known as KKM in Bahasa Indonesia that was established for English subject of the second year students of SMP Rusqah Pekanbaru. In this study, the researcher found that the treatments by using videos could improve the students’ listening comprehension in narrative texts. It was reflected by the mean scores were 68.10 (pre-test), 73 (post test 1) and 78.27 (post-test 2). The different mean score between the pre-test and the post-test one was 4.9, the different mean score between the post-test one and the post-test two was 5.27 and the different mean score between the pre test and the post-test two was 10.17, so the use of videos can improve listening comprehension in narrative texts of the second year students of SMP Rusqah Pekanbaru. The mean score of post-test two was above the MMC (76). Based on the finding of the research, English teachers are suggested to use video to improve students’ listening comprehension of narrative text.
