A Study On The Ability Of The Second Year Students Of SMAN 12 Pekanbaru In Comprehending English Texts
Based on the 2013 curriculum, students of senior high school learn different types of text; three of them are descriptive, narrative and recount texts which are the focus of the present research. There are three main objectives of the research, they are firstly, to find out the ability levels of the second year Exact Science students of SMAN 12 Pekanbaru in comprehending descriptive, narrative and recount texts; next, to find out the ability levels of the second year Social Science students of SMAN 12 Pekanbaru in comprehending descriptive, narrative and recount texts; finally, to find out which students have better ability in comprehending descriptive, narrative and recount text: the Exact Science students or Social Science students. The subjects of the research were 67 students consisting of 32 exact science students and 35 social science students. The results of the research showed that the second year exact science students in comprehending descriptive text were in good ability level because their average score was 68.4. They were also in good ability level in comprehending narrative text, however, their average score was 76.39. On the other hand, they were in mediocre ability level in comprehending recount text with their average score was 46.88. Based on their average scores in comprehending descriptive, narrative and recount texts, it can be inferred that they were in good ability level in comprehending descriptive, narrative and recount texts with their average score was 63.89.
The second year social science students were in good ability level in comprehending descriptive text with their average score was 62.54. However, they were in poor ability level in comprehending narrative text with their average score was 39.68. They were good level in comprehending recount text with their average score was 73.02. In summary, they were in mediocre ability level in comprehending descriptive, narrative, and recount texts with their average score was 58.41. Based on the average scores of the exact science and social science students in comprehending these three types of texts, it can be inferred that they were in good ability level with their average score was 61.15. However, exact science students were better than social science students in comprehending the three types of texts with the comparison of the average score was 63.89 for exact science students and 58.41 for social science students.
Finally, students were suggested to improve their ability level in comprehending the texts by doing exercises, guided by their English teachers. Furthermore, English teachers are suggested to give more exercises as individual or group assignments to their students. It is realized that this research has some weaknesses and limitations, it is recommended that other researchers can conduct research on this topic by comparing students’ ability from one school to another school; for example, students of state school to students of other state school, or students of state school to students of private school.
