An Analysis Of English Teachers’ Code Switching In The Classroom At SMA Darma Yudha Pekanbaru
This descriptive qualitative research is aimed to analyze the English
teachers’ code switching in the classroom setting. This research is conducted at SMA
Darma Yudha Pekanbaru. The participants of this research consisted of three
English teachers. In order to gather the data, the writer used classroom observation
by recording the teachers’ utterances during the English learning. The writer used
Poplack (1980) theory to determine the types of code switching that occur in the
classroom while the functions of code switching that occur in the classroom were
observed based on the theory proposed by Mattsson and Burenhult (1999).
The result of the data showed that the teachers used code switching during the
English instructional process. The findings indicate that the types of code switching
were found out in three types, they are: thirty seven (37) times in intra sentential code
switching, thirty six (36) times in inter sentential code switching and fifteen times (15)
in tag switching. Furthermore, the functions of code switching used by the English
teachers in the classroom were found out in four functions; twenty one (21) times for
elaboration function, twelve (12) times for affective function, sixteen (16) times for
repetitive function and six (6) times for addressee specification.
