Iron oxide particles contained in iron sand has the potential to be applied
as catalyst in methylene blue degradation process. Magnetic iron oxide particles
such as hematite (α-Fe2O3), maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) and magnetite (Fe3O4) are
constituents of the iron sand. Iron oxide particles on magnetic nanoparticles has
superparamagnetic properties. Iron oxide particles can be used as a catalyst in
the degradation process of methylene blue. Synthesize and characterize iron sand
from Logas Village, Kuantan Singingi District and the catalityc activity for
degradation of methylene blue using α-Fe2O3 have been studied. In this research,
the experimental method was carried out using the ball milling method which has
2 stages, namely ball milling for 60 hours and 60 + 60 hours. The structure,
morphologies, and magnetic properties were investigated using X-ray diffraction
(XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and vibration sample magnetometer
(VSM), respectively. The methylene blue degradation test used a ball milling
catalyst for 60 hours + 60 hours. The effect of reaction time and dosage of
hematite nanoparticles was investigated by ultraviolet visible spectroscopy (UVVis)
on catalytic reaction, in which the dose variation of the alpha-Fe2O3 catalyst
is 1 gr, 3 gr, and 5 gr.
The XRD results showed that the iron oxide particles of Logas sand had a
hematite (α-Fe2O3) phase. SEM characterization showed the existence of sample
agglomeration so that the particle size of the sample is uniform and not equally,
this is due to the collision of the iron ball with the particles. The magnetic
properties of samples characterized using VSM showed that the magnetization
saturation value is about 13,25 emu/g and 12,70 emu/g. Based on these magnetic
parameters it can be concluded that the samples is superparamagnetic. Moreover,
the results also demonstrate that the particles of magnetic iron oxide synthesized
using multi-step ball milling have an excellent ability to degrade methylene blue
from aqueous solution. The removal of methylene blue from the aqueos solution
for 14 hours reaction time is about 90,78 % and 99,72 % for 1 gr and 3 gr
hematite nanoparticles, respectively.
