Conventional intensive fish farming has many obstacles, such as high production costs, long harvest times or slower growth of fish, poor water quality which has an impact on declining fish health. The solution to accelerate fish growth is to use photoperiod manipulation (shorter light and longer dark) the application of photoperiod manipulation has succeeded in giving the effect of faster fish growth, but the application of photoperiod manipulation has a bad impact on water quality, so that in closed containers it produces ammonia tall one. Efforts continue to be made so that fish can grow faster and water quality is maintained by a combination of photoperiod manipulation with a biofloc system. The application of biflocs in photoperiod manipulation can maintain water quality, but problems occur in fish where fish experience symptoms of stress. Another alternative that is done is rearing fish with aquaponics systems and photoperiod manipulation. This combination is able to provide faster fish growth, maintain water quality so that fish health is maintained.
The aim of the study was to analyze the health status of fish through the description of fish blood, fish tissue structure and the effectiveness of the application of aquaponics in maintaining water quality. While the benefits obtained from this research are as a source of information and knowledge about the application of aquaponics systems and photoperiod manipulation. The research was conducted in June – August 2020 at the Marine Biology Laboratory, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Affairs, Riau University.
This research is an experimental method with a factorial design that applies two factors. The number of replications used was 3 times with the number of experimental units as many as 12 units. The containers are placed randomly, then the code is divided by drawing lots. The data obtained are displayed in the form of tables and graphs and then discussed descriptively. The results of rearing fish for eight weeks in each treatment gave different growth results where growth using a 24-hour dark photoperiod manipulation with an aquaponics system gave good growth with a weight (66.84 g) and a length of 19.9 cm. 60.53 g) and absolute length (11.97 cm). The daily growth rate was 7.57% and the survival rate for all treatments was 100%. The results of observations of fish blood images in all fish blood treatments were in normal conditions, meaning that the fish were in good health. Histological observations on gill tissue, liver and kidneys in each treatment were all in good condition and normal with no damage. Water quality data also shows that the water quality in the aquaponics system is better than without aquaponics. It can be concluded that the application of aquaponics and photoperiod systems in cultivation gives good results.
