Tingkat Ketergantungan Merokok Pada Mahasiswa Universitas Riau
Smoking at early age increases the chance of smoking dependency. The
chronic impact of smoking on health tend to be ignored because it does not provide
immediate effect. In Indonesia, the prevalence of daily smokers has increased from
12.7% at the age of 15-19 to 27.3% at the age of 20-24 in 2018. To design smoking
control regulations requires data and understanding about smoking dependency.
The purpose of this study was to determine the smoking dependency level of the
students of Universitas Riau and to understood the correlation between length of
smoking and age of start smoking with smoking dependency. This was a analytic
study with survey method, there were 309 students as sample which acquired with
purposive sampling technique. The instrument used was Fagerstorm test for
nicotine dependency. Spearman correlation test was conducted to determine the
correlation between length of smoking and age of start smoking with smoking
dependency level. The result showed that most data of smoking behavior were
consist of males, start smoking at age 18-25, and 1-5 years length of smoking. 252
respondents (81.6%) had low nicotine dependence. There was a significant and
positive correlation between length of smoking with dependency level (p=0.0001)
with weak correlation (r= 0.34) and there was a significant and negative
correlation between age of start smoking with dependency level (p=0.041) with
very weak correlation (r= -0.139).
