Biodiesel is an alternative fuel to overcome the problem of limited fossil fuel
sources due to increasing use. Biodiesel is synthesized by transesterification of
vegetable oil with alcohol and using a catalyst to speed up the reaction. In this study,
biodiesel was synthesized using crude palm oil (CPO). The catalyst used was
KOH/CaO catalyst derived from blood clamshells (CKD) calcined at 900 °C for 5
hours. The catalyst was characterized using XRD to determine the type of mineral
and crystal size of the catalyst and XRF to characterize the composition of
compounds contained in the catalyst. Based on the XRD analysis of KOH/CaO 1g
KOH catalyst at a calcination temperature of 700 °C, showed the presence of
portlandite and calcite phases and the presence of lime (CaO) phases. The crystal
size were 219.9924; 179.9484 and 195.9774 nm for the catalyst KOH/CaO (0.5; 1
and 2) g calcination temperature of 700 °C. The use of the sol-gel method aims to
produce a catalyst with a high level of homogeneity and purity. The crystal sizes of
KOH/CaO catalysts were 512.6746 and 596.2875 nm for catalysts calcinated at
temperatures of 500 and 600 °C. The results of the XRF analysis showed that the
CaO content was 89.419% and 91.396%, respectively, for the KOH/CaO 1g KOH
catalyst at calcination temperatures of 500 °C and 600 °C. The content of CaO
0.5; 1 and 2 g KOH calcined at 700 °C, were 95.505; 88,422; and 88.089%
respectively. The activity of the KOH/CaO catalyst was tested on biodiesel
synthesis using various stirring speeds (300, 400, 500, and 600 rpm) with the
reaction conditions being a mole ratio of oil : methanol 1: 15, catalyst weight 1%
w/w, and reaction temperature 60°C for 3 hours. The optimum biodiesel produced
using a catalyst of 1g KOH/CaO calcination temperature of 700 °C was 94.91%
with an optimum stirring speed of 500 rpm. The use of catalyst regeneration
variations was carried out under optimum conditions, the yield of biodiesel
produced at R0 was 94.91%, decreased at R1, R2, and R3 by 87.48%; 84.96% and
64.38% respectively. The characteristics of the biodiesel produced are 0.01% water
content, specific gravity 880 kg/m3, viscosity 5.38 mm2/s, carbon residue 0.01%
w/w, acid number 0.42 mg-KOH/g, saponification number 225.95 mg KOH/g,
iodine value 50.44 g I2/100g, and cetane number 59.11. In general, the
characteristics of biodiesel meet the standards of SNI 7182.2015.
