ABSTRACT
Sultan Syarif Hasyim Forest Park Conservation Area (Tahura SSH) is a nature conservation area established based on the Decree of the Minister of Forestry and Plantation No.348 / Kpts-II / 1999 dated May 26, 1999 covering an area of 6,172 ha. Forest serves as a habitat of animals in it such as endemic animals of Sumatra is the Sumatran Elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus). Sampling is done using a measuring plot made at a location that becomes the habitat of elephants using pathway transects with purpossive sampling methods. Habitat characteristics to be studied are the type of vegetation, availability of plants as feed, availability of body scrubbed trees, closing headers, distance to water sources, land height, and slope. Determination of habitat used by elephants is based on traces left behind (traces of feed, feces, body scrub trees, and elephant footprints) and interviews. The number of sample paths needed is 5 lanes with a sample area of 1 km. Observations were made on 3 habitats namely shrubs, primary forests and secondary forests. Total observation plots amounted to 25 plots, primary and secondary forest habitats amounted to 16 plots while in bush habitat 9 plots. The measurement results to be calculated are density, relative density, dominance, relative dominance, frequency, relative frequency and index of important values. Characteristics of sumatran elephant habitat in 3 types of vegetation, namely natural forests, secondary forests, and shrubs. Characteristics in natural forests can be concluded that the closure of the title 57.80-76.05%, the availability of feed plants 21.74-42.86%, the availability of body scrub trees there are 4 traces of mud, slope 3-9%, land height 29-98 m, distance to water sources 70-480 m, and distance to natural forests 0 m. Characteristics in secondary forests there is the closure of the title 24.24-50.04%, the availability of feed plants 30.30-56.10%, the availability of body scrub trees 3 former mud, slope 2-11%, land height 53-77 m, distance to water sources 20-250 m, and distance to natural forests 1400-4000 m. Characteristics in the bush there is a closure of 0% title, availability of feed plants 56.67-70.21%, availability of body scrub trees 0 former mud, slope 1-5%, land height 37-71 m, distance to water sources 30-200 m, and distance to natural forests 200-1000 m.
