This study aims to describe the poetry reading ability of class XI students of SMAN 1
Pangean. The ability to read poetry involves main aspects such as intonation, appreciation,
expression, and body language. The method used is quantitative descriptive with a sample of
30 class XI B students. Data were collected through poetry reading tests and direct
observation. The results showed that the average poetry reading ability of students was in
the moderate category with an average score of 76.66. Further analysis showed that the
expression and appreciation aspects had a more significant contribution than the intonation
and body language aspects to the quality of poetry reading. Students who practiced more
often showed better performance in reading poetry. Other factors that influence poetry
reading ability include learning methods, the use of learning media such as audiovisual
recordings, and students' motivation in understanding poetry. It is expected that interactive
learning methods, such as the use of audiovisual media and routine practice, can improve
students' poetry reading skills. Teachers also need to provide individual guidance for
students who have difficulty in reading poetry so that they are more confident in expressing
poetry deeply.
