Executive Summary Rancangan Pabrik Propilena Oksida Dari Metanol Proses Uop Mto Dengan Desain Alat Utama Reaktor Fcc Mto (R-101)
ABSTRACT
The proposed construction of a propylene oxide (PO) plant with a capacity of 25,000 tons per year will be carried out in Bontang Utara District, Bontang City, East Kalimantan. The location was chosen due to its proximity to raw material sources and the availability of supporting infrastructure such as ports, distribution networks, energy supply, and industrial water. Domestic demand for PO, which reaches 22,225 tons per year, has not yet been met by local producers, making this plant strategically positioned to serve both the national market and export opportunities in Southeast Asia. In addition, the global trend toward environmentally friendly chemicals encourages the adoption of cleaner and more efficient production technologies.
The technology applied combines two main processes: UOP Methanol to Olefins (MTO) and Hydrogen Peroxide to Propylene Oxide (HPPO). In the MTO stage, methanssol is converted into propylene using SAPO-34 catalyst in an FCC reactor. The propylene is then reacted with H₂O₂ in the HPPO process, employing a TS-1 catalyst in a fixed-bed reactor to produce propylene oxide. Plant operations will require 3.23 MW of electricity, 155 tons/hour of steam, and 1,181.8 tons/hour of utility water. The utility system includes a steam turbine for power generation, cooling water treatment, boiler feedwater preparation, and domestic water distribution. CO₂ emissions remain within permissible limits and can be released directly into the atmosphere, while wastewater is treated through physical, chemical, and biological processes before being discharged into the environment. To ensure stable operation, reactor temperatures are monitored using type S thermocouples, as catalyst performance is highly temperature-dependent.
From an economic perspective, the total capital investment (TCI) is estimated at IDR 1.397 trillion, while the annual production cost (TPC) is approximately IDR 1.099 trillion. The projected sales revenue figure (IDR 95 million/year) requires verification, as it appears unrealistically low for an industrial-scale facility. Nevertheless, the feasibility analysis indicates promising results, including a payback period of 2.12 years, a break-even point at 40% capacity, an IRR of 21.47%, an ROI of 26.33%, and an NPV of IDR 156.45 billion per year at a 19% discount rate. Based on these indicators, the development of the PO plant utilizing MTO–HPPO technology in Bontang is considered feasible, profitable, and an attractive investment opportunity.
