Penggunaan Optical Brightening Agent (Oba) Pada Bleaching Sequence Untuk Produksi Dissolving Pulp
ABSTRACT
ECF (Elemental Chlorine Free) bleaching is a pulp bleaching method that does not use elemental chlorine (Cl₂) directly, but instead utilizes chlorine oxide (ClO₂)-based compounds as the primary agent. This technology was developed to reduce the formation of harmful organochlorine compounds such as dioxins, making it more environmentally friendly than conventional elemental chlorine-based processes. In the pulp and paper industry, ECF bleaching is able to produce pulp with a high degree of whiteness, maintain fiber strength, and meet international environmental standards. This study aims to determine the effect of adding OBA on the optical properties of paper, to determine the effect of OBA concentration on brightness and whiteness and to determine the alpha cellulose content in the pulp after applying OBA. The production of dissolving pulp involves pre-hydrolysis and kraft cooking processes before entering the ECF bleaching stage. After the ECF bleaching process is complete, the pulp will be added with an OBA (Optical Brightening Agent) compound which aims to increase brightness and whiteness after the ECF bleaching process to obtain maximum results with variations in OBA concentration of 0.5%; 1%; 1.5% and 2%. The experimental analysis data obtained showed results that were in accordance with the ISO 2470 and ISO 11475 standards with the highest results obtained at a 2% OBA concentration variation of 88.76% ISO for brightness and 91% ISO for whiteness as measured using a whiteness meter. Analysis of the alpha-cellulose content in the pulp also showed results consistent with the reference value, with an alpha-cellulose content of 93.5%. In conclusion, the addition of OBA after the ECF bleaching process has been shown to increase brightness and whiteness, achieving optimal results.
