Pembuatan Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC) Dari Pelepah Kelapa Sawit
Oil palm frond contain 40,96% of cellulose. Cellulose is the main raw material synthesis of carboxy methyl cellulose (CMC). The purpose of this research was to determine the optimum conditions of carboxy methyl cellulose (CMC) synthesis from oil palm frond by using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The synthesis of CMC consist of two steps, alkalyzation and etherification. In this research, the NaMCA weight and the time of etherification reaction were examined. The response optimized on the CMC was the degree of substitution (DS), viscosity, pH and purity. The optimum conditions of CMC synthesis from oil palm frond cellulose was obtained from 8 g of NaMCA, and the reaction time of 4 hours. Response Surface Methodology calculation showed that CMC with optimum condition had the degree of substitution (DS) value of 0.81, viscosity 5,72 cP, pH 7,67 and purity 99,56% while in the verification test the DS value was 0.83 viscosity 5,81 cP, pH 7,56 and purity 99,67%.
