A Study On Public Senior High School (SMAN) 1 Rengat Students' Anxiety In Learning English
This study aims to determine the level of student anxiety in learning English in class XI at
SMA Negeri 1 Rengat and the factors that cause it. This research is a mixed study that
combines both quantitative and qualitative research. By using a cluster random sampling
technique, 32 students from class XI science 1 were selected as participants. Data were
obtained through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The questionnaire was
adopted from the FLCAS (Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale) designed by
Horwirtz et al. (1986). The results of the questionnaire show that students' anxiety in learning
English is generally at the level of mild anxiety. Three students (9.38%) were at the anxious
level; fourteen students (43.73%) at the mildly anxious level; twelve students (37.50%) at the
relaxed level; and three students (9.73%) at the very relaxed level. This happens because of
several factors. This study found three factors that cause students to feel anxious when
learning English. The first factor is that they are afraid of making mistakes because they think
if they make a mistake, other students will laugh at them. The second factor is the lack of
students' ability in English, such as a lack of vocabulary and an understanding of grammar.
The third factor is the teacher's role in learning English. Therefore, teachers should be aware
of foreign language anxiety in the classroom because anxiety has become an important factor
affecting students' language learning process.
